Colostrum is the first milk that is produced by the mammary glands of mammals after birth and is particularly rich in immunoglobulin’s IgG, antimicrobial peptides (eg, lactoferrin and lactoperoxidase), and other bioactive molecules, including growth factors. Colostrum contains antibodies to protect the newborn against disease, as well as being lower in fat and higher in protein than ordinary milk.
